Every pay figure converts through the yearly amount. Hourly pay × hours per week × paid weeks per year gives the annual salary; monthly pay is the annual figure ÷ 12, twice-a-month pay ÷ 24, and every-two-weeks pay is the annual figure × 2 ÷ paid weeks. Dividing the annual figure by the paid hours gives the hourly rate.

With the defaults, 30 an hour for 40 hours a week and 52 weeks is 2,080 paid hours and 62,400 a year: 5,200 a month, 2,400 every two weeks and 240 a day. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics uses the same 2,080-hour year to turn hourly wages into annual ones.

All figures are before tax and deductions. Overtime and bonuses are not included, and unpaid leave lowers the yearly total, so reduce the paid weeks to match it.

## How to convert a salary to an hourly rate by hand

Take a salary of 35,000 a year on a 37.5-hour, five-day week.

1. Paid hours a year: 37.5 × 52 = 1,950.
2. Hourly rate: 35,000 ÷ 1,950 = 17.95.
3. Other periods divide the salary by their count: 35,000 ÷ 52 = 673.08 a week, 35,000 ÷ 260 days = 134.62 a day, 35,000 ÷ 12 = 2,916.67 a month.

To go the other way, multiply: 17.95 × 1,950 = 35,002.50. The extra 2.50 is the rounding in 17.95, which is why the calculator keeps the unrounded rate, 17.948718, until it displays the result.

That 17.95 is the rate per paid hour. If the job includes paid holiday, you are paid for weeks you do not work, so the rate per hour actually worked is higher. With the UK statutory minimum of 5.6 weeks' paid leave ([GOV.UK](https://www.gov.uk/holiday-entitlement-rights)), the same employee works 46.4 weeks, or 1,740 hours. Entering 46.4 as the paid weeks gives 20.11 per hour worked. Use the first figure to compare salaried jobs with each other, and the second to compare a salary with freelance or contract work that pays only for hours worked.

## Salary to hourly conversion table

Salaries converted at 40, 37.5 and 35 hours a week, with 52 paid weeks:

| 150,000 | 72.12 | 76.92 | 82.42 | 12,500.00 | 5,769.23 |
| 200,000 | 96.15 | 102.56 | 109.89 | 16,666.67 | 7,692.31 |

A quick mental check at 40 hours: halve the salary and drop three zeros. 50,000 becomes 25, against an exact 24.04. The shortcut assumes 2,000 hours, so it overstates the hourly rate by 4%.

Going from hourly pay to a salary at 40 hours and 52 weeks:

## Why 2,080 hours, and when 2,087 is used

Forty hours times 52 weeks is 2,080, the figure the US Bureau of Labor Statistics uses. A calendar year is 52 weeks and one day, or two days in a leap year, so it has 260, 261 or 262 weekdays. 2026 has 261, which is 2,088 hours at eight a day. The US Office of Personnel Management averaged this over the 28-year cycle after which the calendar repeats. Four years have 262 weekdays, 17 have 261 and 7 have 260, which works out to 2,087.14 hours. Federal law has fixed 2,087 as the divisor for federal hourly rates since 1986 ([OPM](https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/pay-leave/pay-administration/fact-sheets/computing-hourly-rates-of-pay-using-the-2087-hour-divisor/)).

The choice moves the result by less than 1%: 75,000 is 36.06 an hour on 2,080 hours, 35.94 on 2,087, 35.92 on 2,088 and 35.78 on 2,096, the hours in a 262-weekday year. Use 2,080 to match BLS wage statistics. For a given year's exact figure, enter its weekdays ÷ 5 as the paid weeks: 52.2 for 2026.

## Paid and unpaid leave

The paid weeks field controls what the conversion means. Paid holidays and paid vacation do not change the salary, so leave the field at 52 when comparing salaries. Unpaid leave reduces what you are paid, so subtract it: three unpaid weeks turn 22 an hour into 43,120 a year rather than 45,760.

Leave rules differ by country. In the US, the Fair Labor Standards Act "does not require payment for time not worked, such as vacations, sick leave or federal or other holidays" ([US Department of Labor](https://www.dol.gov/general/topic/workhours/vacation_leave)), so paid leave is whatever the employer offers. In the UK almost every worker is entitled to 5.6 weeks of paid holiday, 28 days for someone working five days a week, and an employer can count bank holidays within it.

## Pay periods that do not divide evenly

- **Monthly is not four weeks.** A year has 52 ÷ 12 = 4.33 weeks per month. Multiplying weekly pay by 4 understates monthly pay by 7.7%.
- **Biweekly years with 27 paydays.** Fortnightly pay usually lands 26 times a year, but because 26 fortnights are 364 days, some calendar years contain 27 paydays. OPM notes that federal staff can then receive more than their annual rate in that calendar year.
- **Every two weeks with unpaid leave.** The calculator's every-two-weeks figure is pay for two paid weeks. With 50 paid weeks, a 50,000 salary shows 2,000 per two weeks; spread over 26 regular paychecks it would be 1,923.08.

## Regular overtime and part-time hours

The calculator pays every hour at one rate. If you regularly work overtime at a premium, enter the week's pay instead of the hourly rate. At 25 an hour, a 45-hour week with the US time-and-a-half premium on the 5 hours over 40 pays 25 × 40 + 37.50 × 5 = 1,187.50. Entered as weekly pay with 45 hours, that gives 61,750 a year and an average of 26.39 an hour. Entering 25 an hour with 45 hours would show 58,500, because it misses the premium.

Part-time pay converts the same way with fewer hours. In the UK, leave is pro rata: someone working three days a week is entitled to 3 × 5.6 = 16.8 days of paid holiday.

## Matching a salary with contract work

A contractor is paid only for hours worked and gets no paid leave. To match a 60,000 salary that includes six weeks of paid time off, the contractor has to earn the same 60,000 in 46 weeks: enter 60,000 a year with 46 paid weeks and the rate is 32.61 an hour, against 28.85 on the salaried 2,080-hour basis. Employer pension contributions, health cover and the employer's share of payroll taxes come on top, and the calculator leaves them out.

All results are gross. The [income tax calculator](/finance/income-tax-calculator) turns a salary into take-home pay for the US, the UK and India. ## Questions

### How do you convert an annual salary to an hourly wage?

Divide the salary by the paid hours in a year: hours per week × paid weeks. A full-time US year of 40 hours × 52 weeks is 2,080 hours, so 60,000 a year is 60,000 ÷ 2,080 = 28.85 an hour. The US Office of Personnel Management divides federal salaries by 2,087 hours instead, which gives 28.75.

### How much is 25 an hour per year?

52,000 a year at 40 hours a week for 52 weeks (25 × 2,080). With two unpaid weeks (50 paid weeks) it is 50,000, and at 37.5 hours a week for 52 weeks it is 48,750. The same arithmetic gives 41,600 for 20 an hour and 62,400 for 30 an hour on a 2,080-hour year.

### Is biweekly pay the same as twice a month?

No. Biweekly (every two weeks) means 26 paychecks a year, while semimonthly (twice a month) means 24. On a 62,400 salary a biweekly check is 2,400 and a semimonthly check is 2,600. With biweekly pay, two months a year contain a third paycheck.

### What is the minimum wage as an annual salary?

The US federal minimum wage has been $7.25 an hour since 24 July 2009, which is $15,080 a year on a 2,080-hour year; many states set higher minimums. The Fair Labor Standards Act requires 1.5 times the regular rate for hours over 40 in a week. In the UK, the National Living Wage for workers 21 and over is £12.71 an hour from 1 April 2026, £26,436.80 a year at 40 hours for 52 weeks.

### How accurate is the salary to hourly calculator?

Accuracy depends on your inputs and the method's assumptions. Decimal arithmetic uses 50 significant digits, but estimates, numerical methods and source data can be less precise; the displayed rounding does not remove those limits. It is checked against 5 worked examples whose answers come from independent sources; for example, “30 an hour, 40 hours, 52 weeks” is checked against 30 × 40 × 52 = 62400 by hand; BLS uses the same 2,080-hour year.

### Where does the method come from?

U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics — OEWS technical notes (annual wage = hourly wage × 2,080 hours).
