Megabits per second to megabytes per second converter

An internet plan's megabits per second can be compared with a download display in megabytes per second. Eight bits make a byte, but protocol overhead and congestion can reduce the observed transfer rate. Do not treat the converted line rate as a guaranteed download speed.

One megabit per second is exactly 0.125 megabytes per second. Internet speeds are quoted in megabits per second; there are 8 bits in a byte.

Multiply the number of megabits per second by 0.125. For example, 100 Mbit/s × 0.125 = 12.5 MB/s. To go the other way, divide by 0.125.

Accuracy depends on your inputs and the method's assumptions. Decimal arithmetic uses 50 significant digits, but estimates, numerical methods and source data can be less precise; the displayed rounding does not remove those limits.
