How to choose a health calculator

Choose a measure, then read its limits

BMI uses height and weight; it does not measure body composition. Energy calculators estimate a baseline or a daily total using a stated formula and activity setting. Body-fat estimates require different measurements depending on the selected method. Use the units shown beside each field, and avoid treating outputs from different models as interchangeable. The references and limitations explain which population the formula describes and why an individual result can differ.

Use estimates as a conversation aid

A calculator cannot evaluate symptoms, a medical history or whether a recommendation is appropriate for you. Pregnancy dates, exercise zones and calorie needs are estimates with different sources of uncertainty. Recheck measurements before interpreting small changes, and bring consequential questions to a qualified clinician. Do not post identifiable health information in shared links or public bug reports. Each tool's source links are the best starting point for understanding its particular assumptions.
