How to choose a math calculator

Start with the operation

Use the percentage calculator when the question asks for a share, an increase or a difference; these use different denominators. Choose fractions when the exact numerator and denominator matter, such as scaling a ratio. The scientific calculator is useful for a mixed expression, while equation solvers accept coefficients and show roots. Parentheses determine which operation happens first, so enter the written expression before interpreting its rounded display.

Percentages · Exact fractions · Quadratic equations

Check the domain and precision

A numerical answer and an exact symbolic answer are different outputs. Use a worked example to check whether a tool accepts negative inputs, complex values or only real numbers. Trigonometric functions need the correct degree or radian setting. Near a discontinuity, graph sampling can hide a feature; use the formula and interval as well as the picture. Keep extra precision through intermediate steps and round the final answer for the task.
